I’ve got a bad feeling about Riley’s latest response to New Orleans’ crime problem. In case you haven’t heard, he plans to add another 20 hours of work to an average NOPD patrol officer’s work week in the 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th districts. The plan would cost the city 5.7 million and only last until December.
If financed, the overtime proposal calls for uniformed patrol officers in most districts to work five 12-hour days, a prospect that didn’t sit well with a large number of the rank and file, police employee group leaders said. Riley told members of the City Council’s criminal justice subcommittee that the money would cover overtime shifts for 90 days.
“It is a great opportunity to reduce crime in areas of concern,” Riley said. “It would not be a situation where officers are worked to death.”

This all reminds me of a few foolish lines from a great scene in Scarface…
TV Newsman: “It seams at times all you can do is put your finger in the dyke and pray. But now…”
Tony: “(At the TV) Put your fingers in a dyke? Man.”
