I am actually taking it as a good sign that far right leaning ahem, wingnuts, are the among the only people taking a stand against New Orleans recovery these days, theirs being the perishing and irrelevant philosophy that it is. Anti-recovery pundits living in the tiny margins must be a sign that the sentiment to save New Orleans is growing in the mainstream.
The funny thing is, his arguments against liberalism in New Orleans could be enlarged and applied to the rough shod control of Conservatives in America for six years.
Anyway, here is a link to the mook in question and yes, he is going on the list.
Also, I need to spend some time trying to iron out the logistics of putting 100,000 people on school buses in two days time. If people are going to hate Nagin, hate him for all the reasons we hate him. Ever notice you never hear anyone from here mention anything about school buses?
It is a good sign that this kind of crap is becoming more and more marginalized in national politics. I’m afraid something very different is happening within Louisiana, however. It’s no secret that most of the rest of the State (particularly the regions above Alexandria.. but not only there) has harbored a long-standing resentment toward New Orleans. The post-flood politics in Louisiana views the flood and the stunted recovery as a source of embarrassment in need of “fixing” or, more accurately, punishment. When Jindal rides around the state talking about “corruption” and “crime” it’s not so much aimed at helping New Orleans as it is a subtle way of telling the rest of the State, “we’ll show those (insert colorful epithet)”
Ugly times ahead.
It’s all a matter of scale. This was one huge disaster that many Americans just can’t comprehend–even after all the news coverage. I recall Dr. David Crosby of First Baptist had a really great op-ed in the paper wherein he said he often hears the old, “Well when somebody in our community gets roughed up by a fire or tornado, we all pitch in and fix it.” Of course, in our case it’s the whole community that got whacked, so there’s no menfolk around to raise a new barn, a no womenfolk around to fry chicken and bake pies. When will they get it? When?
Peace,
Tim
There’s so much nonsense in the Northstar ‘nut’s scratchings that it’s almost impossible to effectively refute him–it’s like trying to argue with bus stop lunatics.
That said, it’s interesting that he compares violence in NOLA to…violence in Baghdad, the latter being the wingnut/neocon $500 billion dollar showcase, as opposed to “liberalism’s failure.”
Again, we’re talking about a true bus stop loon here–not even an attention span measured in nanoseconds, but no attention span at all.
