Someone over at CNN must have come down here and had one of them “amazing experiences” and “fell in love with the city” because they have been posting like crazy.
UPDATE: Now I understand.
Beyond Raw: How New Orleans serves up oysters
Making gumbo with John Besh and James Carville
Oysters stage a comeback after BP disaster
5@5 – Five Reasons to Eat in Louisiana
Those were all so difficult for me to read. The unnecessary celebrities (“Carville cooks a gumbo!”) and Brooklyn hipsters with their “warm muff”s and meaningless snobbery (“Central Grocery or nothing”) can all just fuck right on off. Seriously, most New Orleanians grow up never having set foot in Central Grocery but can tell you where to get two or three good muffulettas.. most of which are dispensed in *gasp* Metairie. Although I am partial to Zara’s actually… but, again it doesn’t really matter. The whole it’s-gotta-come-from-this-joint business is just scenesterism.
Also is there a stupider non-word than Eatocracy? Other than Family Gras, I mean.
Like when Creighton Burnette wouldn’t eat lemon ice unless it was from Brocatos.
I have no problem warming up a Muffalatta particularly if the roll is a little stale. It’s good when the oils gush out of the cold cuts and soak into the roll with a little Tabasco added. It’s good, fuck the rule.
“Central Grocery or nothing” seems like a phrase uttered by someone who has never had anything but Central Grocery because they have had the “Central Grocery or nothing” attitude since it was told to them by some other fucker. I know just a few blocks away at Maspero’s they have a damn good Muffalatta (they also have draft Abita in a frosty mug for $2.50 served by a mature woman who calls ya baby).
Still for every instance of people who are afraid of Gulf seafood there has to be articles like these. I actually appreciate them. Though, I dont’t abide by them.
This Donald Link quote is funny though…
“After a few hours of bouncing around on hot humid Gulf waters, we pulled up our first drag, and in it was a couple soft shell crabs. I was very confused – I couldn’t figure out what had happened to it, I thought maybe it was sick.”
It’s true, softshell crabs are fucked up. I eat the hell out of them but I never really lose that weird feeling. I’ve heard there is such thing as a softshell crawfish?
Fried softshell crab is on my list of possible last meals. Also I am scared as hell of Gulf seafood but continue to eat it anyway. Not sure what to make of that.
We are getting closer to that age where we can quit worrying about shit like “long term effects.” That’s for the kids we aren’t educating to worry about. “Sorry we fucked ya! Now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to drink myself to death!”
