Two days ago, I was bemoaning the fact that there was a lot of talk about what was going to happen in the recovery and not enough evidence of anything actually happening. Well, I woke up this morning to the sound of beep-beep-beeps, the smell of diesel and the unmistakable chatter of a work crew digging up the street in front of my house.
Their job was to fix our block’s little “speed bump,” a sunken area of the road that often proved to be quite damaging to guys and gals who cruised down the street too fast and not paying attention. All hours of the night, homeowners on our block would delight at the sound of some speeder’s front end grinding down on the asphalt, a penance for going too fast down Pacific.
On a few occasions, we even had pieces of vehicles fly off as a result of the penalty. Other times we had “stoppers,” folks who would have to stop the car and get out after a particularly nasty experience just too make sure they didn’t lose a bumper or ground effect.
I never even thought about calling the Sewage and Water Board about our little speed bump because I knew it helped make the block a safer place.
Then today I wake up to see progress. Infrastructure repairs indeed. It aint much but we have to start somewhere right? And it only took them, well, I don’t know because it has been there since I moved to the block.
I came home last week to find the city had begun digging out and preparing to replace the sidewalk in front of my house. A huge tree was uprooted in Katrina and grass had grown over the area of sidewalk where the the tree tore it up. It took a weekly call for about 2 months to get the stump/branches taken away. I was so happy about that that I had resigned myself to not having a sidewalk. So now the hole is prepared and just waiting for the cement to be poured. I hope I’m home when it is cuz I want to write 8/29/05 with a fleur de lis in the wet cement.
Have a great week-end!
Looks like work’s on hold for now. The fucking sky just opened up. Go pumps go.
Let me know when it’s done, I want to drive fast down Pacific.
