Jeremy Shockey took a carriage ride at the Square yesterday and even the most avant garde art girls were titillated by his appearance. What I was tickled by was the way he is almost always referred to by his last name and his last name only. He is “Shockey.” He’s not “Reggie Bush” or “Pierre Thomas” or “Drew Brees.” He is “Shockey.” no first name necessary.
The girls were all, “Dude! Shockey’s taking a buggy ride.” and “I just saw Shockey down at Decatur and St. Anne.”
Shockey breaks down all cultural, artistic and intellectual boundaries. He’s a uniter, not a divider.
I even know of a certain lady-blogger who has an odd, Christ-like photo of him framed on either side by her desktop icons in some sort of Virgin of Guadalupe-type assemblage.
There’s something about Shockey.
